About the Clinic

In-Person Clinics are Back at Forerunners North Shore!

After an extended break from clinics, we’re going to be mixing things up a bit at Forerunners North Shore! For our Fall Clinic, we’ll be introducing some new features and new days to our weekly clinic schedule. Our structured speed sessions will now be on Tuesday evenings at 6:30, we’ll be hosting a free social run on Thursday evenings at 6:10, and on Saturday mornings at 8:00 runners will have the option of either a structured long run (with specified pace targets given for various sections of the run) or a free social long run. The structured sessions will be designed and led by Coach Jerry Ziak and the social runs by Run Leader Mary-Ellen Wilderman-Hay. If you are interested in attending the social runs exclusively, there is no need to register for this clinic. Simply show up for any social run beginning Thursday, September 9th, and share some time on your feet with your fellow North Shore runners! The structured clinic will build towards two fall races or time trials. The first will be the Victoria Half Marathon on October 10th and the second will be at the end of the clinic in mid-November. If no local races open up to coincide with the end of the clinic, Coach Jerry will organize a time-trial over 10 km and a half marathon to allow participants to test the fitness they’ve been building. For those of you training towards Victoria, Coach Jerry will be sending out a 12-week schedule to follow through the summer beginning July 17th. For our first long run as a group, on September 11th, Victoria Half Marathoners will be running 18 km while anyone aiming for a half marathon in mid-November will be running 12 km.

For the first week of the clinic, we’ll be meeting at Heywood Park (across the street from Forerunners North Shore) on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. However, going forward from there, the long runs may leave from different locations in order to explore some different routes.


What Can I Do To Prepare?

Victoria Half Marathoners should be prepared to complete an 18 km run by the start of the clinic while those of you aiming to run a half marathon in mid-November should be prepared to run 12 km.

What Should I Expect?

Expect to be a part of a supportive and friendly group of fellow runners, coaches, and leaders that will help you enjoy your running experience at whatever level you're currently training.

Meet the Instructor

Jerry Ziak

Jerry Ziak has been a competitive middle and long-distance runner since 1986. His passion for the sport began at the young age of 10 when he began competing on the track and over cross country in distances ranging from 800 meters to 5 km. Since then he has explored every distance up to the marathon at the national and international level and continues to compete as a masters (over 40) runner in cross country and on the road. He is an owner of Forerunners North Shore and enjoys coaching runners of all abilities. His particular passion is the discovery and practice of training techniques and daily behaviours that allow us to continue moving youthfully as we age.
