A friendly group environment will also give you company and safety on the run.

Come out and meet new people while enjoying the benefits of a structured training group, and prepare yourself for your next running challenge. Sign up today and join the Forerunners crew!

Every Saturday morning and Wednesday evening outside Forerunners on West 4th, Coach Peter and Karen will lead a defined workout. Beginning at 8 km, these long runs will gradually increase week-by-week to 20 km ahead of the half marathon at the end of June. For each session, we will provide a map of the long run and divide into pace groups.  Along the route there will be an aid station, where your Coach’s will be handing out water and providing wise words of wisdom about the run.

Proof of vaccine required at first workout: vaccine passport/card and picture id.

Workouts Included:

6:30pm Wednesday speed workouts at 10km pace; 8am Saturday long runs starting at 8km and building to 20km

Please note we will be meeting off site at McBride Park (across street from store) for all sessions.

Pre-Registration required by March 14th.

Clinic Registration Perks:

By signing up for the West 4th Half Marathon Clinic, you will receive a weekly training schedule through email, clinic souvenir, and a group to train with on Wednesday night (6:30) and Saturday morning (8 am). ID and proof of vaccination will be required at the first workout.

About Forerunners’ Clinics:

Founded by Karen and Peter Butler, Forerunners became the first running store in Canada to conduct organized running clinics in November 1986. The weekly running clinics began as a way to foster fitness and education to customers as the popularity of running skyrocketed during the “Running Boom” of the 1970s and 80s.

Aside from 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the clinics have been held annually and will be returning in full for the first time since the pandemic began.

“As we approach our 36 year store anniversary – later this year – we are excited to resume a full clinic program,” says Peter, Forerunners co-founder and former 2:10:56 marathon runner.

Meet the Instructor

Peter Butler

A member of the 1980 Olympic Team, Peter has an extensive resume when it comes to running. He was a Canadian national champion in the outdoor 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres, and still holds the 5th fastest marathon time by a Canadian. These days, Peter is still running strong – you can still still find him in the store on West 4th.

Meet the Instructor

Karen Butler

Karen is an accomplished runner and a born-and-raised Vancouverite (which means she obviously doesn't think twice about running in the rain). She used to run for Simon Fraser University, and holds a 3 hour marathon time. Still an avid runner today, Karen keeps her passion for the sport alive. She is a cornerstone of the Forerunners community.
